Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund and Emre Can are close to agreeing on a contract extension for the midfielder.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has been negotiating with Can over an extension for a number of weeks and it is now looking likely that they have reached an agreement.
Further details still need to be clarified, but Dortmund are optimistic that they are on the home straight. The length of the contract is unknown but Can could extend his contract until 2026.
It had previously seemed unlikely that Can would stay at Dortmund past the expiry of his contract, but his form in the second half of the season showed that he is still a key player for the club on and off the pitch. Edin Terzic has a lot of trust in the 29-year-old so much so that Dortmund pulled the plug on a transfer for Ajax midfielder Edson Álvarez.
Staying a Dortmund will also give Can a greater chance of playing at the European Championships next summer in Germany as recently Germany national team coach Hansi Flick has also begun to trust Can to fill the midfield position alongside Joshua Kimmich.
