After overcoming testicular cancer, Union Berlin supporters were thrilled to see defender Timo Baumgartl back in the starting 11. It’s been a long road for the 26-year-old, who was able to help Union reclaim their place atop the Bundesliga standings.
Baumgartl stated that, “It’s just nice to be here again. It was an all-around successful day. I imagined this during chemotherapy, during the hardest moments of my life, to be back for this moment.”
He was pulled after 60 minutes of play, but believes, “From my point of view, I could have played even longer. But the coach decided this, I’m not angry with him either. They just want to slowly rebuild me.”
It’s an incredibly inspiring story, as Baumgartl will now have some time to rest before reasserting himself into a consistent starting role.
