Alexander Isak stunned the footballing world this week as he took a bold new step to try and push through his transfer away from Newcastle United. Much to the player’s frustration, Liverpool have been trying to land the 25-year-old all summer, but have not been able to get a deal across the line as of yet.
Seemingly desperate for the move, the Swedish forward has now released a damning statement, in which he accused the club of breaking ‘promises’. While many have assumed those promises relate to being allowed to leave, Isak was somewhat vague in his comments as he wrote:
“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”
Indeed, he doesn’t specifically say that Newcastle promised he could leave, and it’s now been reported that the club’s broken promises are nothing to do with an actual transfer.
Amanda Staveley Made Promise to Isak Before Her Newcastle Exit
The report comes from Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope, who claims that the Newcastle striker’s ‘grip’ actually relates to a ‘contract promise’ made by former co-owner Amanda Staveley. He explains that she wanted to give the player a pay increase but after her exit, new sporting director Paul Mitchell decided against it.
He wrote: “But what is mystifying those close to the club is that his relationships with Howe, the coaching staff and his team-mates have never been broken, and nor have there been promises of allowing him to leave.
“His gripe, they assume, is the withdrawal of what he believed was a contract promise made by former co-owner Amanda Staveley in spring of last year. She believed Isak was worth and was owed a pay increase, even if an offer was never made or the finer details discussed.
“When Staveley left Newcastle, against her wishes, and a new hierarchal structure was formed, new sporting director Paul Mitchell told Isak and his camp the club would not discuss a deal because he had four years to run and was already among the top earners.”
Hope added: “This was true, but Staveley’s thinking was that a new contract would keep Isak happy, reward his performance and avoid a scenario such as the one that has played out this summer.
“Mitchell left the club in June of this year. So, when Isak says trust has gone, does he mean with former employees? This has baffled many.
It is said that Isak resented missing out on a year’s worth of extra money, and that his mind was long since made up on wanting to move on.”
Newcastle Deny Any Transfer Exit Promise Was Made
Following the statement from Isak, Newcastle have offered their own firm response. It’s notable that they don’t deny breaking any promise about a contract, but do state clearly that nothing was agreed about agreeing to any possible exit:
“We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.”
They go on to claim that any buying club will essentially only get their man if they can satisfy their transfer demands with a big enough transfer offer but they don’t ‘foresee those conditions being met’.
