Lille OSC have progressed to the final stage of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers following a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory over José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe.
Heading into the second leg in Turkey, Lille held a one-goal (2-1) advantage over their opponents, thanks to an injury-time goal from Edon Zhegrova. That had looked to be enough for LOSC, who shut Fenerbahçe out. That was at least until the 90th minute when Bafodé Diakité diverted the ball past Lucas Chevalier and into his own goal.
David the hero for LOSC
Having sent the game to extra-time, Fenerbahçe then dominated, before receiving a huge boost when Aïssa Mandi, off the bench to make his LOSC debut, was shown a straight red card for a high lunge. However, it was 10-men Lille who progressed thanks to a late penalty from Jonathan David.
The Canadian’s finish saw Lille progress 3-2 on aggregate, dumping Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe out of the competition. Les Dogues will now face Slavia Prague in a two-legged tie (first match next Tuesday/ Wednesday, and second leg one week later) as they look to book their place in the Champions League proper.
