Everton winger Anthony Gordon may feel it is in his interests to delay signing a new contract at Goodison Park, given previous transfer interest in him, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Frank Lampard splashed the cash in the summer window but clinging on to one of his prized possessions was possibly his biggest achievement.

What is the latest on Gordon?

According to The Sun, Everton’s latest talks with the 21-year-old have stalled with the player’s representatives demanding a £100,000 per-week deal.

The report adds that the Toffees remain eager to offer Gordon a fair pay rise too, but it remains to be seen whether an agreement can be reached.

Lampard remains confident that the club will be able to hang onto the winger regardless of his current negotiations, however, claiming he will remain an Everton player ‘for a long time’.

At present, Gordon – who has played 71 times for the Toffees – earns £10,000 per week, placing him among the lowest earners at Goodison Park.

However, an increase to £100,000 would take him in line with the earnings of Jordan Pickford and leave him behind only Yerry Mina.

The summer transfer window saw Chelsea attempt to sign Gordon, tabling a £50 million offer and leaving the player eager to make the switch.

What has Brown said on Gordon’s future?

Brown believes that the summer declaration from Gordon’s camp that he wanted to leave Merseyside was an issue.

The journalist adds that the player now likely believes he can get a move to a bigger club and may continue to delay putting pen to paper.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it was a problem in the summer when his advisors made it clear that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract. Whether that was an attempt to try and get out of the club or not, whether he meant it like that, I don’t know. But I think he knows that there are bigger teams sniffing around him and that it may not be in his interests to sign anything with Everton right now.”

Should Gordon sign a new contract?

Having been exposed to the interest of one of the ‘big six’ Gordon – who has previously been described as ‘fearless’ – may well feel a big move is just around the corner.

If that is the case, he will know that a significant pay increase would follow with such a transfer, leaving little appeal to penning a new deal with Everton.

If Everton were to include a release clause in any new deal, it may prove to be the right option for Gordon, however.
