American footballers in the NFL are some of the highest-paid American athletes. However, as franchises begin preparation for the forthcoming American Football season, it is estimated there are as many as four hundred plus players without a club. There are many hidden gems within that long list of free agents, many of whom have achieved great things in the game.
The likelihood is these players will get snapped up very soon. There are available players in a variety of positions, all at differing stages of their careers. Many will have strong opinions on who is the best currently available hire, but here are GIVEMESPORT’s 10 best free agents available in the NFL right now.
Ranking Factors
- Honours – what a player has achieved in their career, from individual and team awards.
- Fitness – how much more a player has to give and if they can stand up to more punishment amid the rigours of the NFL.
- Hunger – how much motivation a player has to continue playing at the highest level.

10
Von Miller
Linebacker
Von Miller is arguably the most successful and experienced free agent available at present. With closing in on 15 years of experience in the NFL, the linebacker has won the Super Bowl twice and for different teams. In Super Bowl 50 in 2016, he was instrumental in the Denver Broncos’ 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers.
This was characteristic of his season, in which he led the team with 11 sacks. In the Super Bowl, he sacked Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. Recovering the ball in the end zone led to the first touchdown of the game. This resulted in him being named Super Bowl MVP.

Dalton Risner
Guard
Dalton Risner is mainly seen as a solid player when it comes to pass protection. While he did miss seven games due to injury in 2024, he’s been mostly readily available for selection throughout his career. Near on 30, he could provide valuable experience to NFL sides. At 6 ft 5 and weighing 312 lbs, he’s still in shape.
Although worryingly for him, he found himself in this position last year after being released by the Denver Broncos. He has been quoted as saying he’d be happy to go back to the Minnesota Vikings, but he’s looking for a starting place on the roster.

Matthew Judon
Linebacker
Matthew Judon is a four-season-in-a-row Pro Bowl linebacker. After three seasons with the New England Patriots, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2024. Although experienced, his numbers from last season might put some suitors off.
He missed 13 games in 2023 after sustaining a torn bicep tendon while attempting to make a tackle in a game with the Dallas Cowboys. Over a seven-game period in 2024 had no sacks and no tackles for loss. Although Judon has argued that these numbers were down to the limited time he was on the field with the Falcons.

Kyzir White
Linebacker
Still in his twenties, and with a wealth of experience with three clubs, Kyzir White was ever present for the Arizona Cardinals last season. The 2024 season was arguably the best of his career. Although, once again, the Cardinals missed out on the play-offs after losing two of their last three games against the Rams and the Panthers.
White was a shining light and has been linked with the Dallas Cowboys. Hampered by injuries to his knee and hamstring early in his career, White seems to have got past that. Given his age and experience, he would still represent good value.

Brandon Scherff
Guard
It could be argued that Brandon Scherff’s best form is in the past. But it is a high bar. Selected for the pro bowl for five years out of six while at the Washington Redskins testifies to that. Given that achievement, it will come as no surprise to learn that he was one of the highest-paid offensive guards in the NFL.
However, when leaving Washington for the Jacksonville Jaguars, there were whispers of him struggling. In the last two seasons, he posted his lowest numbers of his career. Yet no doubt he will feel he has a point to prove still.

Za-Darius Smith
Defensive end
Za-Darius Smith’s 2024 season saw a half season with the Detroit Lions, where he did well after being traded by the Cleveland Browns. He achieved four sacks and 15 quarterback pressures in just seven starts. In total, last season he got nine sacks.
There are rumours he will be resigned by the Lions. Smith hopes that is the case: “Hopefully I can get back to Detroit because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great. When I’m there, I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things.”

Keenan Allen
Wide receiver
In Allen’s first season with the Chicago Bears, he got seven touchdowns in 15 games. This, while not in the most progressive team in the NFL in 2024. The Bears ended the campaign with a pretty abject five and 12 record. Allen was a force of nature during his 10 years with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Yet last year’s 70 caught passes for 744 yards wasn’t too shabby. Age may be a factor to put some clubs off, given his position as a wide receiver, but he is quite literally still a safe pair of hands. He may not have been considered one of the top 10 best wide receivers of 2024, but any franchise looking for guaranteed touchdowns needs to look no further.

Amari Cooper
Wide receiver
Ten years ago, Amari Cooper was a first-round, fourth pick for the Raiders in the 2015 NFL draft. While still at the Cleveland Browns in 2023, he was a pick for the Pro Bowl. He was traded to the Buffalo Bills mid-season in 2024. There, he had to learn a new playbook. He adapted well, catching 20 of 32 targets.
It is not too hard to imagine him being paired with a younger, less experienced quarterback. This is a man who has tallied over 1000 receiving yards in seven of 10 seasons as a professional in the NFL.

Justin Simmons
Safety
In 2022, nobody got more interceptions in the NFL than Justin Simmons. That was during his seven-year stint with the Denver Broncos. A plethora of NFL sides are rumoured to be tracking the safety. It has only been two years since he made the Pro Bowl, while it is reported that the Broncos only cut him to free some money on the roster. Doing so saved $18m.
With training camps soon to get started, Simmons will be keen to secure a spot somewhere. Despite his effectiveness at Denver, the franchise failed to make the playoffs each year he made the Pro Bowl. Perhaps there is some hunger left in him to have a few more cracks at winning a Super Bowl title.

Asante Samuel Junior
Cornerback
More than any of the players in this list, Asante Samuel Junior has time on his side. Some are surprised he is still a free agent. He did have to undergo surgery on his neck earlier in the year. Although sometimes criticised for his tackling, he is seen as a playmaker.
There have been rumours that the Miami Dolphins have been in discussion about bringing Samuel to Florida. Arguably, his best match was for the Chargers against the Jaguars in 2022, when he made three interceptions in the first half. There would be many teams interested in that kind of athleticism and running power.
