Speaking on Friday, Bruno Genesio has said that he has been “reassured” following talks with Olympique de Marseille’s hierarchy, despite the club’s current predicament.
There had been talk of Genesio leaving the club amid a poor start to the season. A financial crisis has gripped the club, forcing them to sell their best players over the summer; despite a flurry of high-profile sales (Mason Greenwood, Quinten Timber, Facundo Medina…), OM could not make a single signing of their own and the impact has been evident on the pitch. Marseille have lost five of their first six games of the season in all competitions and currently sit second from bottom in Ligue 1.
Grégory Lorenzi, speaking to L’Équipe, quelled doubts about Genesio’s continuation at the club earlier this week, and the manager has now said that he has been “reassured” following talks pertaining to the nature of the project at the Vélodrome.
“I spoke with Lorenzi and Stéphane Richard (CEO). It was good to do a review of the first cycle of matches. If there is a message for me to give you, it is that we are in an emergency situation. We have to be lucid. We are on a run of four defeats in the league and we have to end it. That’s the emergency,” said the Marseille manager ahead of Sunday’s visit to face ESTAC Troyes.
Genesio continued, “We know that the season will be hard and we also know why, but we can’t tell ourselves that we’re only looking at this season. I needed to get the message that we weren’t working short term but also on next season. I wanted to know the medium-term vision of the new executives so that OM can rediscover its status. I was reassured.”
