Liverpool could well be in with a shout of replacing Arne Slot in the coming weeks, according to reports – with former player and recently sacked Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso thought to be ‘more than happy’ to return to the club.
Liverpool have been on a shambolic run of form in the Premier League of late under Slot, winning just three of their last ten games in the division – with only three of those fixtures coming against top half opposition.
It’s cast huge doubts over Slot, with the Reds having failed to retain their top four spot after results went against them this weekend, and after dropping points at home to all three promoted teams in the space of six weeks, Alonso’s name has been touted.
Sky Sports: Xabi Alonso ‘Would Love’ Liverpool Return Amid Arne Slot Shortcomings
With that in mind, the report by Sky Sports News’ Alan Irwin states that, with Liverpool’s poor form taking a hold, Alonso’s name is ‘constantly’ mentioned on Merseyside.
And that could see the Spaniard take the reins at Anfield if Arne Slot is unable to turn their poor form around.
Irwin said: “This club have very high standards indeed, and may well be considering their options.
Xabi Alonso’s name is constantly mentioned in these parts and sources close to him indicate that he would be more than happy with a return to the club where he was adored by fans in his playing career here.”
The former club icon left Real Madrid by mutual consent at the start of the month, and as one of the most coveted young bosses in world football, he will surely be on Liverpool’s radar.
Alonso’s Stock Has Not Fallen Despite Real Madrid Exit
Alonso joined Liverpool 22 years ago from Real Sociedad, becoming one of Rafa Benitez’s first signings, and played a huge part I their infamous ‘Istanbul’ Champions League win in 2005, before departing for Real Madrid as a player in 2009.
His first managerial role was in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, finishing sixth in his first season as boss – though it was the following campaign where he wrote his name into footballing history, venturing on an entire unbeaten campaign in the Bundesliga and German Cup to win the double, whilst only losing the Europa League final, marking 51 games unbeaten in all competitions with just the one loss.
Although he failed to win a trophy at Real Madrid in his eight months in charge, Alonso’s stock remains high and at the age of just 44, he has plenty of years left in the managerial game.
