Sky Germany reports that Xabi Alonso is on the verge of leaving Bayer Leverkusen with an official announcement expected soon.
Ever since the future of Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has been up in the air, so has the future of Alonso. Now, to the surprise of no one, he will join Real Madrid and will sign until 2028. However, Ancelotti’s departure will be announced first.
It would make sense for Alonso’s future to be announced soon, as Bayer Leverkusen play their final home game of the season against Borussia Dortmund on Sunda,y and it would give the former midfielder an opportunity to say goodbye as well as for the fans to thank the man who won their first ever Bundesliga title.
Leverkusen have already begun their search for Alonso’s successor. Alonso’s former international teammate Cesc Fabregas is said to be die Werkself’s preferred candidate to succeed the Spaniard. Erik ten Hag, Alvaro Arbeola and Sandro Wagner are other names that have been mentioned in the past.
