Wolverhampton Wanderers’ search for a new head coach appears to be over.
According to Fabrizio Romano, they have agreed a deal to appoint Rob Edwards as their new manager.
Middlesbrough had initially turned down their approach for the 42-year-old.
But the Championship outfit have released a statement that Edwards has been given permission to speak to the Premier League club.
Wolves have made the former Wales international their number one target after Gary O’Neil rejected the opportunity to return to the Molineux Stadium.
It appeared Edwards would stay in North Yorkshire, given he only arrived in June and led his team to an impressive start to the season. Boro sit fourth in the Championship table after recording seven wins from 14 games.
But the lure of returning to Wolves, where he played as a defender between 2004 and 2008, looked to have proven too strong for the manager.
Edwards will face a tough challenge to keep the Old Gold in the English top-flight.
They are rooted to the bottom of the table after a winless start to the Premier League season.
Wolves lost two of their best players in Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri last summer, but failed to bring in quality replacements.
They haven’t kept a single clean sheet this campaign and have scored just seven goals from 14 league matches.
