Wolfsburg managing director Peter Christiansen conducts angry interview: “If I’m the problem, I’ll gladly leave and that’s fine!”

Addressing rumors that he may be close to losing his job, VfL Wolfsburg managing director Peter Christiansen didn’t exactly help his case by conducting an aggressive interview with Sky Germany on Friday night. Christiansen spoke just prior to kickoff in Wolfsburg’s away fixture against Werder Bremen. The Lower Saxon Autostädter ended up losing yet again, incurring their sixth defeat of the campaign. 

After being dumped out of the Pokal last week, Christiansen found himself at the center of a very public dispute with Wolfsburg back-up keeper Marius Müller. The frustrated Müller fearlessness discussed the incident with the German press, showing practically no respect for a club boss who has not received specific backing from the club board. 

Wolfsburg’s woes clearly extend beyond the need for a new head coach. It is such that a sweeping front office house-cleaning may take place over the international break. Wolfsburg – who made a specific point of making European contention their objective this season – still have plenty of time to rescue their season. Eight points from ten matchdays leaves them in 12th place in the Bundesliga table.

“If people no longer want Peter Christiansen here, then the supervisory board will tell me and it’s fine with me,” Christiansen angrily answered. “That’s not how I operate. I operate like I’m going to be here for another 15 years. When you want to lay a new foundation, there are times at which it’s difficult. That’s football.

“It’s a results-oriented sport and we all know that,” Christiansen nevertheless continued. “We [Paul Simonis and Schindzielorz] have been in this business for a long time and know how it works. It’s not a problem for me. If I’m the problem, then I’ll gladly leave.”
