Southampton could see former boss Will Still make a quickfire return to Championship management as he has been involved in discussions with domestic counterparts Norwich City over potentially replacing Liam Manning in the Carrow Road hot-seat a matter of days after his departure from St Mary’s, according to BBC Sport journalist Nick Mashiter.
Saints have won back-to-back fixtures since Tonda Eckert was placed in interim charge earlier this month, with victories over Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday allowing them to move eight points clear of the relegation zone, but they may see their most recent full-time chief head to the Canaries in the coming days.
Still in Discussions to Become Next Canaries Chief
Still has held talks to become Norwich’s next manager just days after being sacked by Southampton, according to Mashiter, with the Norfolk side ramping up their search for a new boss following the hierarchy’s decision to dismiss Manning in the aftermath of last weekend’s last-gasp defeat to fellow strugglers Leicester City.
The Canaries have found themselves in serious danger of dropping into League One following an underwhelming start to the season, with Sheffield Wednesday being the only side below them in the Championship standings, and influential figures behind the scenes are seeking to quickly identify the right option to guide them to safety.
BBC senior football news reporter Mashiter has suggested that Still has been spoken to by Norwich, in a bid to understand whether he would be interested in taking the job at Carrow Road, while contact has also been made with former Blackburn Rovers chief Jon Dahl Tomasson after he was axed as Sweden’s national boss.
Manning guided the Canaries to three wins over the course of his 17-match reign, having been lured away from domestic rivals Bristol City during the summer, while 11 defeats were also suffered along the way before it was decided that a change needed to be made in the hot-seat.
Mashiter has revealed that Norwich held face-to-face discussions with Gary O’Neil – who enjoyed a spell on the Norfolk-based club’s books during his playing career – earlier this week, but key decision-makers have decided to keep their options open ahead of returning to action against Birmingham City on November 22.
Still was relieved of his duties at Southampton just five months into a three-year contract, with him only guiding Saints to one Championship victory since beating newly-promoted Wrexham in stoppage time on the opening day of the campaign.
