The next edition of the Supercopa de España is beginning to take shape, on the back of Thursday’s developments in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
The 2nd and final participants in the upcoming Copa del Rey showpiece, of course, were confirmed a short time ago.
Owing to a remarkable 3-0 drubbing of Atlético Madrid, Athletic Club kept their hopes of silverware for the campaign very much alive.
The Basque giants will face off against RCD Mallorca in the Copa finale on April 6th, with the first piece of major silverware of the Spanish season on the line.
Win or lose, though, both Copa finalists have already ensured their shot at another title, early next year.
As much comes owing to the newly-introduced Spanish Super Cup format.
The competition, won most recently by Real Madrid back in January, nowadays features four teams, who face off in a pair of semi-finals, and ensuing finale.
With two of the contestants coming by way of the finalists in the Copa del Rey, this of course means that Athletic Club and Mallorca have already been pencilled in.
They will be joined in turn by the winners and runners-up from this season’s edition of La Liga, looking, at present, most likely to come in the form of Real Madrid, and one of Barcelona, or Girona.
