Chelsea face a major defensive rebuild this summer with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen set to leave when their contracts expire in June. There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of club captain Cesar Azpilicueta; who has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona.
As a result of the impending departures the Blues have been linked with a number of defenders, including RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian centre-back is left-footed and experienced at playing on the left-side of a three man defence; making him the ideal replacement for Rudiger.
The 20-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders over the last two seasons. Impressing at former club Dinamo Zagreb before sealing a move to the Red Bull Arena last summer.

Gvardiol made 46 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig last term, helping the club finish fourth in the Bundesliga and progress to the semi-finals of the Europa League. And his impressive form has seen him linked an array European football’s elite clubs. including Chelsea, as well as Tottenham.
However, the Croatian international dismissed speculation over his future, revealing he expects to still be at Leipzig next season. “I really enjoy every day with this great team, at this first-class club,” Gvardiol told German publication Bild.
“I don’t think about anything else. And if you ask me if I’ll play here next year: Yes, of course.”
Leipzig are in a strong position regarding Gvardiol, with the defender under contract until the summer of 2026. However, according to Croatian publication Index.hr a bid in the region of £67million may be enough to secure his services.
