West Ham United agree personal terms with midfield target Edson Alvarez

West Ham United have rekindled their interest in Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez and reached an agreement with the Mexican international on personal terms, reports Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The deal for the Mexican international was previously halted due to the dispute over agent fees.

Coming off a historic Europa Conference League triumph, David Moyes has been eyeing reinforcements to raise the bar even further, but to little effect.

Despite a reputed transfer committee – comprising Moyes, technical director Tim Steidten and sporting director Mark Noble – at the helm, Hammers have failed to make a single signing in the ongoing transfer window.

It has been attributed to the divide between Moyes and Steidten over the transfer targets.

Moyes prefers players with Premier League experience – as highlighted by interest in Joao Palhinha, James Ward-Prowse, Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire – while Steidten wants to dip their toes in the foreign market.

With the Scottish manager’s future plunged into doubt, the Irons are looking to alleviate the situation by accelerating their transfer business.

Hammers are set to open their account with the acquisition of Alvarez as the talks are in progress with the Eredivisie outfit.

The 25-year-old will cost between €40-50 million, and West Ham are confident of striking a deal.

Alvarez has been earmarked as a replacement for Declan Rice, who has left for Arsenal in a record-breaking £105m deal.

Hammers are poised for a further capital injection as Gianluca Scamacca is on the verge of moving to Atalanta in a deal worth around €30 million.

They are looking to reinvest the proceeds in new signings, but they are in a race against time since the transfer window shuts down in a little less than a month.

Moyes’ side have a long list of objectives, including a left-back, defensive midfielder, striker and winger.
