One year after joining SV Werder Bremen from the English Championship, English fullback Lee Buchanan is returning to England’s second division. Werder licensing head Clemens Fritz confirmed the 22-year-old’s departure earlier in the day. Buchanan was unveiled by Birmingham late this evening.
Early reports suggest that the Hanseaten were able to secure a transfer fee of approximately €1.5 million for the player they acquired on a free. Speaking to German footballing journalist Tim Lüddecke of Kicker Magazine from Bremen’s training camp, Fritz vowed that the club would find a replacement.
“We’ll try to implement something promptly,” Fritz told Lüddecke, “We have to evaluate the sporting quality and look that it also fits economically. That’s sometimes the difficulty in the whole story and you need some patience for that. We already know that there is still something to do there, but it’s not like we’ll be starting competitive matches next weekend.”
