Werder Bremen are back in the Bundesliga and have brought in a number of players to boost their chances of survival, including centre-backs Niklas Stark, Amos Pieper, Jens Stage, Oliver Burke and Lee Buchanan. In addition, Mitchel Weiser’s loan move from Bayer Leverkusen has been made permanent.

At the same time, Werder have managed to hold on to all their key players from last season with the exception of Ömer Toprak, who has left the club on a free transfer to sign for Antalyaspor.

Pieper is likely to start at the back alongside Milos Veljkovic and Marco Friedl, while the other new signings will probably have to settle for the bench at first, although Buchanan could start as a left wing-back if Anthony Jung doesn’t recover from injury in time for the opener.

Here is our predicted Werder line-up for their game against Wolfsburg on August 6:

Jiri Pavlenka

Amos Pieper
Milos Veljkovic
Marco Friedl

Christian Gross

Mitchel Weiser
Leonardo Bittencourt
Romano Schmid
Anthony Jung

Niclas Füllkrug
Marvin Duksch
