Vinícius vs Mbappé: Carlo Ancelotti explains Real Madrid’s penalty-taker pecking order

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has on Saturday provided an insight into how his players will decide who takes responsibility of penalties during fixtures this season.

This comes after Los Blancos were afforded their first opportunity of the campaign from 12 yards in midweek.

En route to a 1-1 stalemate with Las Palmas, the Spanish champions, midway through the 2nd-half, were afforded a spot-kick for a hand ball offence.

A discussion ensued, with it having ultimately been decided that Vinícius Jr. would be the man to step up, slotting home in confident fashion to secure a share of the spoils for Real Madrid.

This, of course, left summer signing Kylian Mbappé, long the first-choice penalty-taker at Paris Saint-Germain, to watch on en route to his third successive scoreless outing.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the spot-kick pecking order in his squad, once more, was put to the aforementioned Carlo Ancelotti.

And, in his response, the Italian tactician went on to reveal that as much will be decided between his two star attackers, in game situations:

“Penalty taker? I think it’s right to give the responsibility to Vinícius and Mbappé, because they have the same quality to take penalties. Many things happen in the game, it could be that one has already scored a goal, that the other needs to score a goal… I have confidence in both of them to choose the taker. I don’t see a problem there.”
