According to Kicker, VfB Stuttgart are currently unable to afford to make Alexander Nübel’s loan move permanent as his future remains up in the air at parent club Bayern Munich.
As things stand, making Nübel’s loan move permanent, which does not include a buy option, could cost around €8m as well as paying his salary which is expected to be in the single-digit million range, which is currently too expensive.
An alternative option is to loan Nübel for another year, but Bayern may then be inclined to extend his contract for another year so they can avoid losing him on a free transfer. On Nübel’s future at Stuttgart, sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth said: “We don’t have it in our own hands. We are in constant contact with Alexander and his management. There is clear mutual appreciation.”
Since moving to VfB in the summer, Nübel has played a big role on and off the pitch in helping Stuttgart reach third in the table only one point behind his parent club Bayern. On Sunday, Nübel will have a chance to show his quality to the Bayern bosses as Stuttgart travels to Munich to face the Recordmeister.
If Stuttgart fails to keep Nübel beyond this season they already have a backup plan. The goal is for youth goalkeeper Dennis Seiman to eventually become number one at the club, but internally it is believed that he still needs another year of development before he can become number one, this would likely mean Stuttgart would have to invest in a ‘transition’ goalkeeper.
