The WWE
will once again run back Saturday Night’s Main Event on January 25th following the show’s successful return to television in December. Officially billed as Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVIII, this will be the 38th edition of the classic program. It will take place at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Last month’s show featured several elements that brought back nostalgia for old school WWE fans. WWE Hall of Famer and legendary commentator Jesse “The Body” Ventura also returned to the announce desk. For “one night only,” WWE COO Triple H
also awarded Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes
with the classic Winged Eagle Belt, which he carried to the ring before his championship match against Kevin Owens
.

Undoubtedly, last December’s Saturday Night’s Main Event proved to be a huge success. This month’s offering, however, should have some implications for the Road to WrestleMania, which begins exactly a week later with the 2025 Royal Rumble
. With that said, GIVEMESPORT is here to give you everything you need to know about the upcoming WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2024

Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens headlined the show

Last month’s Saturday Night’s Main Event featured six matches. Cody Rhodes successfully defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens. However, it came in rather controversial fashion as Owens almost had Rhodes beaten with a stunner. But he was unable to secure the three-count as the referee was knocked out on the outside. The champion managed to come back and won the match by hitting a Cross Rhodes on Owens on a steel chair. Despite retaining his title, Cody Rhodes’ night ended in an ambulance after The Prizefighter delivered a package piledriver to The American Nightmare. Claiming he was screwed out of the title, Owens has since been parading around with the classic Winged Eagle Championship.

As for the other matches, the night began with Drew McIntyre taking care of his personal business with Sami Zayn. Liv Morgan defeated Iyo Sky to remain the Women’s World Champion at the time.

Gunther successfully retained his World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Finn Balor and Damian Priest in a Triple Threat Match. It was also a historic evening as WWE fans witnessed the coronation of Chelsea Green as the inaugural WWE Women’s United States Champion.

Unlike the majority of WWE Premium Live Events nowadays, Saturday Night’s Main Event will have a start time of 8PM ET, which is 1AM BST for WWE fans in the UK. That is a couple of hours later than the Royal Rumble, which will begin at 11PM BST (or 6PM ET). Nonetheless, UK wrestling fans have been used to staying up late to watch the WWE and Saturday Night’s Main Event will be no different. The good news is that the program will only run for two hours. The show should be done by 3am BST (or 10 PM ET). So UK fans can still hit the sheets relatively earlier than typical WWE shows, which currently run over two hours.

Singles match

Four matches have been confirmed for Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVIII. For the second straight show, Gunther will defend his World Heavyweight Championship, this time against crowd favorite, Jey Uso. ‘Main Event’ Jey challenged The Ring General a couple of weeks on RAW. Uso has been trying to finally win the big one. Can he get it done against The Ring General?

In addition, WWE Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker will put his title on the line against Sheamus. Breakker successfully defended his championship against Sheamus and Ludwig Kaiser at Survivor Series in November. Breakker has been incredibly dominant in his second run with the title. As for Sheamus, he is still seeking to win his first Intercontinental Championship, the only title that has eluded The Celtic Warrior in his career.

Another title match was added to the program this past week on RAW. Nia Jax blindsided Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley with a backstage attack prior to the show. The former WWE Women’s Champion proceeded to defeat Bayley later in the night. Jax thought she took out the Women’s World Champ. But after her victory, Ripley stormed out with revenge on her mind. The two then brawled until they had to be separated by WWE officials. Ripley then challenged Jax to a title match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

The fourth match of the night is the only contest that does not involve a championship. Instead, it will be just two beasts going at it in the ring. It’s been three weeks since the WWE teased fans with a chilling stare down between Jacob Fatu and Braun Strowman. Strowman somehow got himself involved in Bloodline business when he attempted to save Sami Zayn from a beatdown from the wild group of Samoans. But the new Bloodline used its numbers advantage to take down the Monster Among Men.

Since then, Strowman has been trying to get his hands on Fatu. This past week on SmackDown, The Monster came out to stop a Bloodline ambush on LA Knight. Strowman and Fatu had another stare down and seemed prime to finally go at each other. But Tama Tonga pulled Fatu out of the ring to save the colossal clash for another day. That day will come on January 25th, when Strowman and Fatu go one-on-one in a seismic showdown at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Additionally, after headlining the previous iteration of the show, Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes will once again be across each other at the upcoming SNME. But instead of a match, they will sign the contract for their upcoming Undisputed WWE Championship match at the 2025 Royal Rumble.

The two have been going at each other over the past month. Though he retained the title, the previous SNME did not end well for Rhodes, who has since returned to SmackDown after getting dropped on his head following their championship match. An enraged Rhodes challenged Owens to a ladder match, with both the current Undisputed WWE Championship and the classic Winged Eagle Championship hanging above the ring.

Now, the two will sign their contract this Saturday. These signings typically never end well. But to ensure that Owens and Rhodes don’t kill each other, SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis called on the services of WWE Hall of Famer and San Antonio legend Shawn Michaels to moderate the signing.
