The United States National Men’s Team surrendered a one-goal lead in the Gold Cup final, and lost to Mexico by a 2-1 margin at the end of the game.
Chris Richards, who plays his club soccer as a center back for Crystal Palace, struck first for the USMNT in the fourth minute at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The lead lasted only 23 minutes, though, as Raul Jimenez equalized for Mexico, and held the scoreline into the break.
Edson Alvarez then scored the winner in the middle of the second half, capitalizing on Mexico’s dominance of possession, pressure, and effectiveness when on the ball.

USMNT React to Gold Cup Loss to Mexico
Mexico won the Gold Cup for a 10th time
USMNT started their Gold Cup run in fine form as they thrashed Trinidad & Tobago by a 5-0 score, before triumphing over Saudi Arabia, and Haiti, to complete a clean sweep in the group stage. It then needed a 4-3 shoot-out win over Costa Rica to separate itself after a 2-2 draw. A 2-1 win over Guatemala in the semifinal set up the final clash over Mexico, where it fell at the final hurdle.
Regardless, team captain Tim Ream is looking at the positives.
Former USMNT star and Fox Sports analyst Alexei Lalas also drew on the positives.
“Over the last three weeks, they established the identity that players coming in have to live up to … This was where the seeds were planted.”
Mexico’s overall performance was a classy one as Raul Jimenez even brought out a shirt in tribute to the recently deceased player Diego Joto, following his goal at 1-1. Jimenez and Jota were once teammates at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
