Aston Villa manager Unai Emery ‘will be backed’ in the upcoming January transfer window after taking over the reins from Steven Gerrard, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Emery made his return to English football last month following a successful stint back in his homeland with Villarreal, and he is likely to be handed a sizeable budget when the market re-opens for business.
What is the latest news involving Villa?
Villa have been ambitious in the transfer market since returning to the Premier League back in 2019/20, spending nearly £300 million on new signings since then.
However, that impressive outlay hasn’t resulted in success on the pitch, and Emery has outlined that the club’s owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens were determined to secure his services.
“They were so clear. The decision was difficult, but the message was clear for me,” admitted the Spanish tactician.

“We want your experience; we want your capacity to achieve some objective in your career as a coach and your experiences in the Premier League gave you more experiences for the present now. We want to improve and create a new future and go up.”
Emery will now have a couple of months to assess his first-team squad before the market re-opens for business at the beginning of January.
What has Jones said about Villa?
Villa have handed substantial funds to both Dean Smith and Gerrard since re-establishing themselves in the top-flight.

And Jones has informed GiveMeSport that he expects the Midlands outfit’s hierarchy to do the same, although he can’t envisage a ‘big spend coming in January’.
He said: “He will be backed, any new manager at a club of this level would need assurances of that and Emery will have ideas about the growth potential. I don’t see a big spend coming in January, but I do expect some business.”
Who could Aston Villa sign?
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness] have claimed that Emery has ‘instructed his new club to move quickly and try to sign’ Villarreal’s Nicolas Jackson.
The 21-year-old’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season, meaning the La Liga outfit may be forced to offload him in the winter or risk losing him on a free transfer.
Jackson is believed to have a £27 million release clause written into his existing deal, and Villa could face stiff competition from Barcelona for his signature.
Villa have struggled in front of goal so far this season, and Jackson may be the ideal candidate to provide some cover and competition for Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins upfront.
