This weekend, on every day from Friday to Sunday, there is one marquee boxing event featuring some of the biggest names in combat sports from Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez, to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, and, finally, Naoya Inoue.
But the wider world isn’t yet focused on the fight game, not when the internet streets are busy debating whether 100 men could beat up a gorilla.
Not to miss out on the trending topic, former MMA champions Ben Askren and Dan Cormier discussed the mythical match-up on the latest episode of Funky and the Champ. In boxing, renowned host Dan Canobbio was sure to get super lightweight fighter Rolly Romero’s take, before he fights Garcia. It even harks back to Mike Tyson, who once delivered an absurd anecodate involving himself, a zookeeper, and a gorilla.

Boxing & UFC Fighters Discuss 100 Men vs 1 Gorilla Debate
Not everyone is convinced the gorilla would kick ass
Introducing first, FIGHTING out of the blue corner, we have 100 men. Hell, why not, 100 FIGHTERS!
And, FIGHTING out of the red corner, we have one of the biggest and baddest beasts in the natural kingdom. He can weigh as much as 450 pounds, and can rip a person’s limbs off with brute force alone. He goes by the nickname King Kong — it’s one … single … gorilla!
Social media is mostly in agreement that the gorilla would run a rampage through 100 average men. But the combat sports kingdom believes 100 fighters may well have the upper hand, particularly as a gorilla’s cardio may not hold when destroying man after man after man.
“Everyone is neglecting cardio here,” said Askren on his show. “Even dangerous human beings who have trained for this [can] get tired.”
He then broke it down thusly:
“I was just doing the math. If a gorilla can kill a human in 15 seconds, 100 humans, that’s 1500 seconds, that’s like 25 minutes. Can a gorilla really fight hard for 25 minutes? No, that gorilla can’t fight hard for 25 minutes.”
Taking the opposite view, Cormier said: “Every time they’re running at him, he’s like, bang, bang, bang. 100 men have no chance. It will not take 25 minutes. First off, he’s biting, he’s scratching, and he’s slapping the s*** out of you.”
That’s when Askren asked what if it were 100 Dan Cormiers against one single gorilla.
“I’m getting my a– kicked over and over again.”
Speaking to Dan Canobbio, Romero, who fights Garcia on Friday in Times Square, New York City, did not hesistate to back 100 regular men, not even fighters, in the ludicrous debate.
Even Mike Tyson Once Wanted to Fight a Gorilla
He seemed to only want to take the gorilla on himself, not even needing 99 others as back-up
Tyson once said he had the idea when on a date with a former girlfriend, Robin Givens, as he rented out an entire zoo, and came across the gorilla.
“I paid a worker at New York’s zoo to re-open it just for me and Robin,” said Tyson.
“When we got to the gorilla cage there was one big silverback gorilla there just bullying all the other gorillas. They were so powerful but their eyes were like an innocent infant,” he said.
“I offered the attendant $10,000 to open the cage and let smash that silverback’s snot box.”
“He declined.”
Probably for the best.
