UFC boss Dana White has issued a three-word comment regarding the prospective super-fight between heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, and the two-weight ruler Alex Pereira.
British slugger Aspinall returns to the Octagon on Saturday, the 25th of October, for the first defense of the heavyweight championship. At the Eithad Arena in Abu Dhabi, he takes on Ciryl Gane. And while the division is largely bereft of elite challengers, a tantalizing proposition of a champion vs champion bout involving Pereira could be on the table. All Aspinall has to do is play his cards right.
Pereira has been a lightning rod in mixed martial arts since transitioning from championship kickboxing. He ran amok at middleweight, effectively clearing out the division, and has tallied extraordinary wins at light heavyweight, too. Now, heavyweight could be next as he looks to become a three-weight king.
With both fighters likely keen to swap slugs, it’s on White to make it happen — and it’s a bout he seemingly wants to make if his latest comments are anything to go by.
Dana White’s Statement on Aspinall vs Pereira
White said this week, ahead of the UFC 321 show in the Middle East that “anything is possible” regarding a super-fight and, likely, Aspinall’s only credible challenger considering Jones would rather have vacated his belt than take on the champ.
“We’ll see how things play out Saturday and then the end of this year.”
Aspinall, therefore, just has to do one thing to do his part in making the Pereira fight happen — win against Gane, preferably with a statement, considering Bon Gamin lost by knockout to both Francis Ngannou (fifth round), and Jon Jones (first round) during his previous two attempts to win the heavyweight title.
One stumbling block in booking the bout, as GIVE ME SPORT. previously reported, is that, while Pereira has said he wants to fight at heavyweight, he is not specifically targeting Aspinall. Making his intentions clear with a four-word comment, Pereira said earlier this month: “Casa Blanca… Jon Jones,” which roughly means The White House against Jon Jones.
