When Bayern Munich beat Freiburg 1-0 on Saturday, Serge Gnabry started at No. 9 in place of the injured Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
And with Choupo-Moting still sidelined, there seems to be a good chance that Gnabry will start up top again in Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Manchester City.
“There’s nothing against Serge Gnabry playing as the nine,” Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel revealed at the pre-match press conference.
“He maybe doesn’t have the size, but neither do Thomas Müller nor Sadio Mané. We’ll also miss Choupo at defensive set pieces. Thomas plays best around a striker. Sadio can also play up front.”
Overall, though, Tuchel’s starting lineup isn’t completely set in stone yet.
“When you’re playing in a quarter-final against Manchester City, there are going to be hard decisions. We still have a few injuries and knocks. The squad decision was very easy, it was everyone who was available. The line-up isn’t 100 percent confirmed yet.”
