Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly been urged to leave Real Madrid just seven months after joining on a high-profile free transfer from Liverpool. New manager Alvaro Arbeloa is believed to have told the defender to depart ‘for his own good’.
The buzz around Alexander-Arnold’s arrival was massive in the summer, as Los Blancos prised the right-back away from his boyhood club, Liverpool. Unfortunately, things haven’t quite gone to plan at the Bernabeu.
Over halfway through his debut term in Spain, the world-class defender has only made 16 appearances in all competitions due to ongoing injury issues. He also lost his place in the starting line-up to 34-year-old Dani Carvajal under former boss Xabi Alonso.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid Dream Becomes a Nightmare
Spanish news outlet El Nacional have revealed details of a ‘frank conversation’ between Alexander-Arnold and Arbeloa, who replaced Alonso in the dugout two weeks ago.
The Spanish coach is said to have sent a ‘clear and forceful’ message that the ex-Liverpool star wasn’t in the club’s long-term plans and he should seek a summer transfer. There are also said to be doubts about how the England international has adapted to the club.
8 Years Later, Jurgen Klopp’s Damning Prediction is Haunting Trent Alexander-Arnold
Jurgen Klopp has a way of seeing things before they even happen, and that has rung true twice with former Liverpool players.
Arbeloa has warned the No.12 that he will not receive regular minutes, and Alexander-Arnold’s representatives are reported to already be looking at their options. The report claims Alexander-Arnold is aware his Real Madrid career has been a ‘failure’.
Speaking in June about his decision to leave Liverpool and join the Spanish giants, in comments that don’t look to have aged well, the two-time Premier League winner said:
“There came a time when I had to decide whether to leave or stay, and it wasn’t easy. I’d been there for so long that it wasn’t easy. There comes a time when you have to make a decision, and for me, this was the right one.”
Where Could the Former Liverpool Man Go?
There will be no shortage of teams interested in a player who was seen as the best in his position less than 12 months ago. Whether those clubs could afford a transfer fee and Alexander-Arnold’s £240,000-per-week wages is another question.
Real Madrid are said to be disappointed with the defensive work rate and attacking output of the 27-year-old this season. That’s something for potential suitors to keep in mind.
Bookmakers currently have a return to the Premier League as the most likely outcome, but not a return to Anfield. Instead, the Reds’ biggest rivals, Manchester United, are 4/1 favourites (per William Hill) to pull off one of the most shocking deals of all time. Joining the Red Devils on those odds is Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
