The team Trent Alexander-Arnold once claimed to be his favourite aside from Liverpool has re-emerged and raised some eyebrows ahead of his proposed move to Real Madrid. It was confirmed earlier in the week that the English defender had all but sealed a move to the Spanish capital when his contract runs out at the end of the season.
While there has yet to be any confirmation from either club or the player, the news ends months of speculation with the 26-year-old departing his boyhood club, having been there since he was a schoolboy. However, he may have to make up for some kind words about one of his potential new team’s biggest rivals, who were also believed to be interested in him.

Alexander-Arnold Named Barcelona as His Favourite Team Aside From Liverpool
The defender is now set to join their biggest rivals
Speaking to GQ magazine in 2020, as per The Standard, the full-back revealed that his favourite team outside of England was actually La Liga giants, Barcelona. Explaining his reasoning, Alexander-Arnold detailed how he felt that Los Cules held similar values to the Anfield outfit:
“I’d say my favourite other team would be Barca. I feel as though they’ve got kind of the same values and beliefs as Liverpool.”
Interestingly, in the same interview conducted when the defender would’ve been just 21, he was also asked about his feelings about a future move to Spain, where he suggested that he had never comtemplated moving away from Merseyside.
“It’s not something I’ve ever really thought about,” the 26-year-old said. “I’ve always loved Liverpool. I’ve always supported them. I’ve always played for them. So, I’ve never had that reason to think about it. Yeah, still now, I wouldn’t sit there in my room and daydream about playing somewhere else.
“Right now, I’m a Liverpool player. I love the club more than anything. I love everything about it. I love the fans, the people. I love the city. So, no, why would I think about that?”

Barcelona Were Interested in Signing Alexander-Arnold
Despite his comments praising Barcelona, the England international opted to join their bitter rivals despite the fact that it was claimed that the current La Liga leaders were in fact interested in signing him. Spanish journalist Guillem Ballague revealed in a clip posted to social media that the Camp Nou side wanted to make the defender, widely considered to be one of the best in his position, a ‘stellar addition’ to their squad.
He also claimed that there had been interest across multiple regimes at the club, and that any suggestions that Barcelona were looking purely for players to be an understudy for current right-back Jules Kounde is not the case, and more of an example of the club trying to save face.
