Conor Gallagher is due to undergo his Tottenham medical on Tuesday after Spurs swooped to snatch the Atletico Madrid and England midfielder from Aston Villa’s clutches in a deal worth £34.6million (€40million)
If all goes to plan, Conor Gallagher and teenage Brazilian left-back Souza will be unveiled as Tottenham players in the coming days.
On Monday, Spurs sprung into action to muscle in on Aston Villa’s deal to sign Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in light of Rodrigo Bentancur’s hamstring injury, which requires surgery.
Heading into the window, Tottenham had not been planning to strengthen their midfield options but they are now so light on the ground, they were left with little choice but to bolster their ranks due to a lack of numbers.
Gallagher, who was on the club’s radar in the summer of 2024 prior to his move to the Wanda Metropolitano from Chelsea, is set to sign a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Europa League winners.
But his arrival is unlikely to spell the end of Tottenham’s winter transfer activity as Spurs are also striving to add another attacker to Thomas Frank’s underperforming squad.
That is the next priority because Tottenham are down to bare bones in forward areas despite the return of Dominic Solanke, who made his first appearance in five months from the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Villa.

Dejan Kulusevski is still at least one month away from returning while Mohammed Kudus won’t be back until after the international break in March due to a serious adductor injury.
Brennan Johnson was sold to Crystal Palace at the start of the month for £35million and Richarlison also hobbled off last weekend with a suspected hamstring issue.
The bottom line is, Tottenham need to replace Johnson, who was their top goalscorer with 18 in all competitions last season under Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs love RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande but he would cost a premium fee (potentially upwards of £65million) and blowing that kind of cash on a raw, relatively unproven prospect appears somewhat risky given Frank is yet to get the best from the likes of Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert, respectively.
Savinho was the club’s ideal target last summer but he has since picked up an injury that will see him sidelined until February, plus, there are doubts as to whether Manchester City would let him go anyway.
Lucas Paqueta was assessed last summer but West Ham’s wantaway Brazilian is now pushing for a return to Flamengo.
Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz is a dream target but he’s still expected to sign fresh terms in Turin and is also appreciated by a cluster of other Premier League clubs.
The Turkey international would also cost a monstrous fee and there is little chance he would be available this month as he’s a crucial player for the Bianconeri.
Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche remains admired but don’t be surprised if a left-field, surprise name surfaces in the coming weeks as Spurs, according to Frank, are working tirelessly to strengthen the squad for not only the short term but long term, too.
