Tottenham should have £15m star ‘on board for pre-season’ at Hotspur Way

Tottenham are confident they’ll have Djed Spence on board for the start of pre-season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The north Londoners have been chasing the England Under-21s right-back for several months and Jones reckons that “talks are progressing” and that Antonio Conte should eventually get his man.

What’s the latest news involving Spence?

With Spence away on international duty, Spurs have been unable to negotiate with him over a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Sky Sports believe that talks are expected to commence this week as Conte hopes to tie up his fourth summer signing.

The report states that with Fabio Paratici focusing on bringing other players through the door, Daniel Levy is personally ‘leading the club’s pursuit’ of Spence.

It also adds that Tottenham believe the 21-year-old is worth around £10m, while Middlesbrough are demanding closer to £15m.

Spence has expressed his desire to join Tottenham, with The Athletic reporting earlier this month that linking up with Conte would be his preferred choice, helped by the lure of Champions League football.

Spurs have already signed Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma and Jones is confident that Spence will follow the trio in the coming weeks.

What did Jones say about Spence?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Spurs are refusing to be rushed into paying over the odds for Spence but talks are progressing and there’s a general feeling that they should have him on board in time for pre-season.”

Will Spence be Tottenham’s first choice right wing-back?

Levy and Tottenham wouldn’t be putting this much effort into getting a deal over the line if Spence wasn’t going to become a key part of Conte’s plans.

However, he’s only had two full seasons in senior football and has never kicked a ball at Premier League level.

Spence performed exceptionally against Arsenal, Leicester and Liverpool in the FA Cup, but doing it on a weekly basis and not in front of a red-hot home crowd represents a totally different challenge.

Therefore, he’s hardly going to walk into the squad and become number one straight away, but Conte likes to rotate his wing-backs, so Spence should get his fair share of opportunities, especially with the Champions League group stage being played across an eight-week period, meaning the squad will be stretched.
