Tottenham set to sign Pedro Porro after reviving deal with Sporting

Tottenham Hotspur’s deal to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Pedro Porro seemed dead in the water after the Portuguese club reneged on their initial agreement.

However, according to The Athletic, the deal is back on track, with both sides now reaching an agreement in principle for the defender’s transfer.

Spurs will part ways with €45 million, and the transfer is on track to be completed ahead of Tuesday’s deadline once all relevant paperwork has been finalised.

Sporting had been reluctant to let Porro leave this month, especially after his scintillating performances this term.

The former Manchester City man had accumulated three goals and 11 assists in 26 appearances, displaying his potency from the right-back position.

His performances were enough to earn an international debut for Spain, which came in a World Cup qualifier game against Georgia in March last year.

His ability to be effective on both sides of the pitch is something that Antonio Conte has missed in his Spurs side, and Porro’s addition could improve their decision-making in the final third.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas had informed the 23-year-old that he would be allowed to leave following Saturday’s Portuguese League Cup final.

Porro will sign a four-and-a-half-year deal with the North Londoners, which could help facilitate a loan move for last summer’s signing Djed Spence, who has barely featured for the first team this term.

The Portuguese giants will look to snap up Porro’s replacement in what remains of this month’s transfer window.

Barcelona defender Hector Bellerin has been linked with a loan move to Ruben Amorim’s side for the remainder of the season.

The former Arsenal man has failed to establish himself in Xavi Hernandez’s side since arriving at the Spotify Camp Nou on a free transfer last summer.
