In a recent edition of The Done Deal Show, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs stated that Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race for Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni. Jacobs said,
“I think that Tottenham have definitely made an approach to him (Bastoni) and they remain the frontrunners, and Manchester United are fully aware that they need to strengthen in that area, but at the moment they are less advanced in the deal.
“Bastoni is clearly a player that specifically appeals to ten Hag, but Tottenham would be more confident of making that deal.”
Bastoni’s Impressive Form In Italian Football
Bastoni had a decent campaign with Inter recently as he managed to perform at a high level for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The 23-year-old participated in 44 matches for the Italian outfit last season, netting one goal and securing three assists in various competitions.
The 14-time Italy international managed to impress with his performances at the heart of Inter’s backline after he averaged 1.4 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 89.6% in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
Is Bastoni The Right Choice For Tottenham Hotspur?
Bastoni has been a rock at the back in Italian football over the past ten months. He knows how to snuff out the danger quickly and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. The Italy international can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air and is also an accurate passer of the ball.
Someone of Bastoni’s quality will be a good fit for Antonio Conte‘s brand of football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He will enhance the quality of Conte’s defence and might even help the North London outfit stay competitive across all fronts in the coming seasons.
At 23, Bastoni will only get better as he matures as a footballer with each year. Thus, he will be a decent choice for Spurs to pursue this summer as long as he can maintain his good form in English football.
