Tottenham have ‘tinge of regret’ over £150k-a-week star at Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur might regret not re-signing Christian Eriksen in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Spurs were linked with the Denmark international, only for him to end up joining Manchester United on a free transfer after his deal at Brentford expired.

What’s the latest news involving Eriksen?

According to Football Insider, the north Londoners made their move to sign Eriksen and looked in the driving seat at the beginning of the window.

Not only had Eriksen played for the club previously, but the man that brought him from Tottenham to Inter Milan was Antonio Conte.

Regardless, Spurs ended their interest, which allowed Eriksen to sign for United, penning a three-year contract worth £150,000 per-week at Old Trafford.

Despite missing almost the whole of pre-season, the midfielder has been one of the Red Devils’ most influential players this term.

On the other hand, while Tottenham are above United in the standings, Conte’s side look short on creativity from central areas, highlighted by their goalless draw with Frankfurt in the Champions League.

Therefore, O’Rourke reckons they might look back on the possibility of re-signing Eriksen as a case of what might have been.

What did O’Rourke say about Eriksen?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure there’s maybe a tinge of regret, especially when seeing how well Christian Eriksen has done at Manchester United, he’s been a real good signing and has brought a bit of authority and creativity to the midfield and he was on a free transfer, so it looks a great piece of business.”

How has Eriksen performed this season?

Eriksen is now playing in a midfield two, compared to the No.10 role when he was at Tottenham, which allows him to create from deep and link the play.

As a result, he’s averaging the most successful passes per game in the United squad (48.6), while only Diogo Dalot (1.6) makes more key passes every outing (1.4).

Two of those have led to assists, with Eriksen setting up Marcus Rashford’s second goal in the victory over Arsenal last month and Antony’s stunner against Manchester City last week.

Eriksen is still yet to get off the mark, but he’s averaging almost two shots per game, which suggests that he’s not far off being able to celebrate his first goal in United colours.
