Italy’s professional league football has been around for almost a century. And in this vast period of time, the Italian first league has seen some great players. However, there are some special players who have played in this league after touching their 40s as well. They are quite special. And they deserve a separate mention. Serie A has been constantly offering us some great moments, but whenever we tend to mention an old player, legends like Gianluigi Buffon and Del Piero are the names that pop up in our minds. Let us see the top 5 oldest ever players to play in Serie A.
Marco Balotta (44 years 1 month 8 days):
He is the oldest ever to play for any Serie A club. The SS Lazio goalkeeper set this record back in 2008. The goalkeeper was unaware of the fact that he was the one to set a record. Not only that, but he also kept a clean sheet in the match.
Gianluigi Buffon (43 years 83 days):
Gianluigi Buffon needs no introduction. The legendary goalkeeper of the Italian regime left his beloved nation to join PSG but returned a year later. And still going strong with his boyhood club Parma. They are currently in Serie B. However, he will top the list if Parma returns to Serie A anytime soon. Although, the legacy he created, would not be easily replaced by anyone, anytime soon.
Francesco Antonioli (42years 7months):
Against a strong Novara Calcio side, Antonioli was chosen to protect the goal of AC Cesena. However, he couldn’t deliver a special performance to remember the match. As the hosts, won comfortably by 3 goals to nil.
Alberto Fontana (41 years 9 months):
Back in 2008, Jose Mourinho’s legendary Inter Milan came to town, and Fontana was handed over the responsibility to protect the Palermo goal. The result was obvious, as the stout Inter side didn’t let it slip. They won the match by 2 goals to nil.
Roberto Colombo (41 years 234 days):
The veteran goalkeeper achieved the feat while he was in his last days in Caligari. He was a third-choice keeper back then for the club. However, in his long career, he has played in some of the popular Italian clubs like Milan and Napoli as well.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic still going strong and ageing like a fine wine, this list might see an outfield player quite soon.
