Chelsea co-controlling owner and interim sporting director Todd Boehly has stepped down from the latter role. He will continue to oversee the club but will no longer handle transfers.
According to The Telegraph, he will leave the transfer duties to his new hires, Paul Winstanley and Christopher Vivell.
Boehly acted as the sporting director following his arrival at the club last summer. He sacked Petr Cech and Marina Granovskaia.
Boehly oversaw the arrivals at the club in the summer transfer window. Chelsea spent over £300 million to secure Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Gabriel Slonina, Marc Cucurella, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Raheem Sterling, and Denis Zakaria.
This January, Chelsea signed Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, and David Datro Fofana for around £59 million. They are also closing in on Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid.
However, Boehly has assembled a new recruitment team, including Director of Global Talent and Transfers Winstanley and Technical Director Vivell. He wants to leave them to their jobs.
There is also Laurence Stewart, who joined from AS Monaco. The club is expecting Joe Shields to join from Southampton.
Vivell and Winstanley are leading Chelsea’s transfer strategies for this January transfer window and in the future. The club is searching for a backup right-back for Reece James, a new midfielder and wide attacker.
They want to sign some of the best young talents and strengthen head coach Graham Potter’s squad.
Speaking of Potter, Boehly reportedly still has faith in the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss, who is struggling with Chelsea.
Chelsea have only one win in their last seven games in all competitions. Their previous match ended 4-0. They barely competed against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Chelsea fans chanted former manager Thomas Tuchel’s name and for former owner Roman Abramovich at the game.
Despite the toxic state of the club, Boehly will not sack Potter after only five months because Chelsea see him as a long-term manager.
The news will relieve Potter, who is under fire at the London club.
