Andy Robertson is in talks to join Tottenham from Liverpool with football.london taking a look at three reasons why that move is a smart one
Tottenham making a move to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool during the January transfer window has been heavily questioned. However, it actually does make a lot of sense.
It has been a challenging first six months in north London for head coach Thomas Frank with results in the Premier League particularly disappointing. Spurs head into this weekend’s clash away at Burnley in fourteenth and closer to bottom side Wolves than league leaders Arsenal.
Pressure on Frank’s job from supporters has been significant, as a result, though a 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund saw that ease. Nonetheless, there are still concerns over his long-term future with the decision to try and sign Robertson criticised even though his signing would actually solve quite a few problems.
Firstly, the 31-year-old is very experienced at the top level and has captained Scotland since 2018. Cristian Romero has struggled with the responsibilities of being skipper after Son Heung-min and James Maddison – the other two members of the last leadership squad – left the club and picked up a serious injury, respectively.

Discipline has been a major problem for Spurs this season, as highlighted by the 56 Premier League yellow cards – eight of which have been shown to Romero, that places them second in the disciplinary table.
As stated by The Telegraph, Frank is hopeful that Robertson takes responsibility on the pitch and drives standards in the dressing room with his clear leadership qualities.
He was set to be out of contract at Anfield this summer with Spurs initially looking to sign him as a free agent if he did not agree on fresh terms. However, the injury to Ben Davies is likely to be a big reason behind bringing forward those transfer plans.
Destiny Udogie has also struggled to stay fit this season, which has often left Djed Spence filling in at left-back with Pedro Porro always on the opposite flank and barely rested as a result. January signing Souza could have helped, though it would be harsh to throw the 19-year-old straight in at the deep end especially if Udogie suffers another injury.
Robertson will also be able to play in the Champions League knockout stages, though Spurs would have to take out a player to include him. With uncertainty surrounding whether or not Davies could play again this season, it seems likely he will be replaced by Robertson should the deal go through.
With talks progressing, the dialogue between both camps could remain open and into the summer. Curtis Jones is another Liverpool star of interest to those in north London and he perfectly fits what the club desperately need in midfield.
His contract situation makes a potential deal even more appealing with Liverpool facing the possibility of selling as his current deal expires in 18 months. Unfortunately for Tottenham, there is also interest from Anfield in one of their star players – Micky van de Ven.
Liverpool’s issues at centre-back are well-documented and therefore Spurs could feasibly demand a sizeable fee with Arne Slot’s side likely to meet that demand.
Given his age and declining minutes, it is easy to see why there is confusion over the move to bring in Robertson. However, the reasons behind the transfer move are equally clear with Spurs in need of more defensive depth and experience in their backline.
