West Ham United suffered their heaviest defeat of the season in all competitions this weekend as Brighton & Hove Albion stunned them with a 4-0 win.
The pressure is now back on manager David Moyes with the defeat leaving the Hammers just two points above the relegation zone.
If things continue like this, they will most likely go down to the Championship. The club hierarchy could pull the trigger on Moyes’ reign and if they do, below are some of the candidates they could turn to.
1- Rafael Benitez
Benitez was most recently the manager of Everton where he lasted only just six-and-a-half months. At the time of his departure, the Toffees were 15th in the table with six points above the relegation zone.
However, the Spaniard is still regarded as a top manager who boasts a lot of experience in the Premier League. Everyone is familiar with his achievements at Liverpool where he won the Champions League trophy in 2005.
Benitez also did an excellent job at Newcastle United where he won the Championship title in 2016-17 before leading them to 10th and 13th place finishes in the English top-flight.
2- Nuno Espírito Santo
Nuno Espirito Santo failed to revive the fortunes of Tottenham Hotspur after taking over the club in June 2021. He was dismissed after just three months in the job, following a run of five losses in seven top-flight matches.
However, Nuno received a lot of plaudits for his incredible work at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He not only kept the Midlands outfit in the Premier League but also installed a recognisable pattern of play at Wolves.
The Portuguese is currently the manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad but could be convinced to return to England.
3- Frank Lampard
Lampard pulled off an incredible feat by securing Everton’s top-flight status after taking over the club in January 2022 when they were just four points above the relegation zone. However, he led the Toffees to a disastrous start this season and was sacked in January with his side sitting 19th in the table.
Lampard is unlikely to get the West Ham job but if the situation becomes direr at the London Stadium and if they fail to land any top coach, then the former Chelsea legend could be considered.
