Thomas Müller recalled to German national team

The DFB have announced that Hansi Flick has called up Thomas Müller to replace Niclas Füllkrug who has picked up an injury.

Füllkrug will still travel to the national team’s base in Wolfsburg ahead of their friendly against Japan. The 30-year-old has picked up a slight tendon strain and is likely to not be available for the two friendlies. This will be Müller’s first time back with the national team since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar where Germany was eliminated in the group stages.

The nomination of Müller now means that Germany are now without a recognised striker. In the current squad, there are a host of players who can play as a striker but none of them have the same profile as Füllkrug. This continues to highlight the issue that Germany currently faces when it comes to choosing their attacking options.

The lack of quality at striker now means that players such as Kevin Behrens will get shouts to be nominated for the national team. Looking at the under-21 team there are recognised strikers such as Mainz’s Nelson Weiper, Werder Bremen’s Nick Woltemade and Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko but it is currently unknown if they become the type of quality that Germany needs to progress deep into international tournaments.
