Speaking at the 10-year celebration of the Hout Bay Football Community, Jürgen Klopp commented on the lengthy ban that has recently been handed to Paulo Fonseca following an outburst against Benoit Millot.
The Lyon boss has been handed a 9-month ban after he reacted infurtiatedly to a decision made during OL’s 2-1 victory against Brest in Ligue 1. Fonseca could be seen squaring up to the French referee following a VAR review in his side’s win. Les Gones plan to appeal the ban that would see the Portuguese head coach banned from the touchline until November.
Like the former Lille manager, Klopp was also a fiery figure on the touchline. This was often seen with some of his reactions to the officiating during his 9-year spell at Anfield as the manager of Liverpool. Talking about the severity of the OL manager’s ban, the former Borussia Dortmund manager compared this to some of his altercations with match officials, “I saw that Fonseca got a 9-month ban. There are similar pictures of me out there of me and the referees. Let me just say it like this: between no red card and a nine-month ban, it is that much (fingers spread 1cm wide). So I am really happy that I don’t get into these situations anymore.”
