The Undertaker Refused to Lose to One WWE Superstar During Attitude Era

The Undertaker is one of the biggest stars in WWE history, and The Deadman’s authority is as strong backstage as it is in the ring. This authority was further vindicated when he outright refused to lose to a rising Superstar.

According to former WWE wrestler X-Pac, that is exactly what happened when ‘Taker told Vince McMahon that he wouldn’t go down to an up-and-coming wrestler, as requested. The Undertaker certainly wasn’t one to use his standing within the company to get his own way, unlike others who were in a similar position. Bubba Ray Dudley – one half of The Dudley Boyz – once told how The Phenom refused to kick out of their ‘3D’ finisher because nobody had done so before, and he wanted to protect the move.

The Undertaker has never shied away from elevating other stars, if it is for the greater good of the company. Such as dropping his WrestleMania streak to Brock Lesnar, and again losing to Roman Reigns at the showpiece event to try and propel Reigns’ position.

The Undertaker’s Refusal Revealed by X-Pac

According to X-Pac, ‘Taker simply said ‘nah, that’s not happening’

However, according to X-Pac, The Deadman refused to go down to A-Train. The WWE Hall of Famer told Cultaholic: “They actually booked him [A-Train] to beat Undertaker on TV one time… But Undertaker was like, ‘Nah, that’s not happening. Like, ‘Just out of nowhere?’ And I don’t blame Mark [Calaway].”

A-Train went on to have a long career in and out of WWE, under a plethora of gimmicks, none of which really stuck. From the early 00s to his in-ring retirement in 2014, he became more of a comical character than a serious competitor, from breaking through as Prince Albert to participating in a dance-off with Brodus Clay while wearing lingerie. He was never more than part of the mid-card roster.

Perhaps ‘Taker saw this would be the case with A-Train and didn’t want such a loss on his record. However, The Undertaker has suffered shock losses in his career, notably on a 2008 episode of SmackDown when he was defeated by Vladimir Kozlov.

A-Trian, real name Matt Bloom, has continued working with WWE even after retiring from in-ring action. He is now a respected trainer, and is currently the head trainer of the NXT brand, after working his way up through the WWE Performance Center.
