Ten Hag could make big decision on £800k-a-week stars at Old Trafford

Manchester United could look to sanction Harry Maguire, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Eric Bailly’s Old Trafford departures when the transfer window reopens, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag strengthened his options with the loan additions of Jack Butland, Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer last month, but it appears he has now turned his attentions towards potential exits.

Man United transfer news – Summer departures

According to the Mirror, Maguire, Martial, McTominay, van de Beek, Telles and Bailly are set to be put on the market as Manchester United are preparing for a big-money fire sale.

The report suggests ten Hag is drawing up a strategy for the summer and remains keen to make room in his squad for big-name arrivals.

Offloading the six stars would allow Manchester United to save close to £800,000-per-week in wages, which would boost the club’s chances of being able to splash the cash when the transfer window reopens.

Respected journalist Jones recently told GiveMeSport that Maguire’s future will be assessed in the summer after falling down the pecking order under ten Hag.

Telles is currently on loan with Sevilla, although the Spanish side do not have an option or obligation to make the move permanent, while Bailly’s temporary switch to Marseille will become a long-term agreement for £5.1million if he makes a pre-determined number of appearances and helps the Ligue 1 outfit to qualify for the Champions League.

What has Dean Jones said about the situation?

Jones believes the progress Manchester United have made under ten Hag means they are now in a position to offload players currently on the fringes of the squad.

The transfer insider feels the Red Devils may look to find buyers for Maguire, Martial, McTominay, van de Beek, Telles and Bailly if it is decided they do not have a future at Old Trafford.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “This is something they weren’t doing under previous regimes. The managers were changing and the style of football was changing. There’s so much uncertainty, their league positions weren’t good, results weren’t good and you couldn’t get to this point.

“Because they’ve had such quick improvement under ten Hag, I think there’s reason now to think about whether these players have a future at the club. If not, why should they stay any longer?”

Could any of the six stars have left in January?

According to the Daily Star, Maguire turned down the opportunity to join Inter Milan on loan during the final days of the winter transfer window.

The report suggests the Serie A giants could return to the negotiating table at the end of the campaign and the central defender will consider making a summer exit if he is unable to secure more game-time in the weeks ahead.

Manchester United also turned down an enquiry from Premier League rivals West Ham United earlier in the window.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ hopes of potentially finding a buyer for van de Beek ended when he suffered a season-ending knee injury during the win over Bournemouth last month.

Martial also spent a significant amount of the transfer window on the sidelines as an injury restricted him to just three appearances in January.
