Ten Hag could give £250k-a-week star shock chance at Old Trafford

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial ‘might actually get a crack’ at reviving his career at the club under new manager Erik ten Hag, in the opinion of Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor.

The 26-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with La Liga outfit Sevilla after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

What is the latest news involving Martial?

Martial arrived at United from AS Monaco as a talented 19-year-old in a deal that could potentially rise to £58 million back in September 2015.

The France international’s first four years at the club brought frustration and promise in equal measure as he showed glimpses of his truly top-class potential in between lengthy lulls in form.

However, Martial produced consistently outstanding displays throughout 2019/20, registering 23 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances to provide genuine hope that he had finally blossomed into the striker United hoped he would become.

But that faith soon dissipated after the versatile star found the back of the net on just seven occasions the following season, and his temporary switch to Sevilla last term also failed to reignite his career.

Jose Castro, the Rojiblancos’ president, confirmed that they will not be making Martial’s stay at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium permanent, meaning he could be plying his trade in the red half of Manchester once again next term.

What has Taylor said about Martial?

The Red Devils are set to release attacking players Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani, and Jesse Lingard on free transfers at the end of the month, and Taylor believes Martial might get a second chance to prove his worth under Ten Hag.

He told GiveMeSport: “Players like (Marcus) Rashford and Martial can play in multiple positions. I do think Martial might actually get a crack under Ten Hag.

“There’s not really been much interest in him, and they’ve lost a lot of players. So, it doesn’t really make sense to keep offloading unless you’ve got players in place.”

Could Martial play his part under Ten Hag?

Martial, who reportedly takes home £250,000-per-week, was dubbed a “Ferrari” by BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves in 2020 during a purple patch.

Nevertheless, producing such dazzling displays week in, week out has always been the versatile star’s biggest issue.

With two years remaining on his contract, though, United are under no pressure to offload him this summer, and with their attacking options significantly diminishing, he could be handed one last chance at redemption.
