Southampton now ‘trying to finish move’ for £17m star at St Mary’s

Southampton are working with the representatives of Nicolas Jackson to try and finalise his move from Villarreal, Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has told GiveMeSport.

The Saints are known to be in the market for attacking reinforcements this January and appear to have set their sights on bringing in the talented 21-year-old.

Southampton transfer news – Nicolas Jackson

The Athletic have previously revealed that Southampton are ‘working towards a permanent deal’ for Jackson as they look to bolster their forward line.

It’s believed that the Senegal international will cost the Saints around €20 million (£17.5m), but manager Nathan Jones revealed nothing is ‘close’ during his pre-match press conference ahead of the defeat to Aston Villa.

“I wouldn’t say anything is close at this point. But we have a number of names in a number of positions that we want,” the Welsh tactician admitted.

“Targets that we like for their certain characteristics and that we feel would add to what we have. Until anything is definite, it would be foolish of me to confirm, deny or speculate on anything. I know it’s boring, but it’s the way it is.”

Jackson has only scored three goals and provided four assists in his 33 appearances for Villarreal, though, and his record may concern some sections of the Southampton support.

What has Taylor said about Jackson?

Taylor has told GMS that Jackson is free to leave Villarreal and that his agent is attempting to complete his switch to St Mary’s.

He said: “I know Nicolas Jackson’s representatives are trying to finish that move. A bit of groundwork has been done already, and he’s not been part of the Villarreal squads recently.

“Quique Setien’s pretty much said that he, like (Arnaut) Danjuma, could be heading out the door. But for some reason, that deal hasn’t been completed yet.”

Who else have Southampton signed?

Southampton have already signed Croatia winger Mislav Orsic from Dinamo Zagreb on a two-and-a-half-year contract this January after splashing out £8 million to secure his signature.

The south coast club then brought in midfielder Carlos Alcaraz from Racing Club with the 20-year-old setting them back around £12.3 million.

And Jones has now made the decision to recall Jan Bednarek early from his season-long loan spell at Aston Villa as he is eager to bolster his options at centre-back.

Jackson’s arrival could complete a busy winter window for Southampton, who are desperately trying to climb out of the relegation zone.
