Southampton Coach Paul Trollope to Join Rob Edwards at Wolves

Southampton coach Paul Trollope is set to join Wolves with Rob Edwards, after his appointment was confirmed as manager on Wednesday afternoon, reports John Percy.

Wolves confirmed the appointment of Edwards on Wednesday, with the former Middlesbrough manager signing a deal until 2029. GIVEMESPORT understands that he was handed a long-term deal due to the fact that the club believe that he can keep them in the Premier League, but if not, he’s got what it takes to manage them in the Championship.

The Saints themselves are also in search of a new manager after Will Still was sacked. Trollope joined Southampton back in June, around a month after Still was brought to the club, but it appears that his spell on the south coast is already coming to an end.

According to the Daily Telegraph’s John Percy, Southampton first-team coach Trollope is set to join Edwards at Wolves. The report claims that links to Joleon Lescott, a former player for Wolves, have been dismissed, while Harry Watling will join Edwards in making the switch from Middlesbrough.

Trollope worked as an assistant manager to Edwards at Luton before he joined the Saints, while he’s also held roles at Nottingham Forest and Brighton. Trollope also worked with the Wales national team during their impressive Euro 2016 run, which saw them reach the semi-finals.

The 53-year-old has also had spells in management with Bristol Rovers and Cardiff City, but he’s predominantly known for his roles as a coach or assistant. It shouldn’t be too much of a blow for Southampton to lose him, as their new manager will likely want to bring in his own coaching staff anyway.

It’s been almost two weeks since Southampton sacked Still, who spent just five months in charge of the club. Tonda Eckert has been in the job on an interim basis, managing their last two games, and he’s overseen two victories so far.

It’s unclear whether Eckert will be given the opportunity to manage Southampton on a permanent basis, but he’s certainly doing his chances no harm with how the Saints have played over the last few weeks. At the very least, the club will be content knowing they are in good hands while they find a new, long-term manager.
