Manchester United are a club steeped in immense history – and there are plenty of stipulations that come with being one of the greatest football clubs in the world, including Sir Alex Ferguson’s specific kit rule for those creeping up the academy ladder.
The stubborn Scot oversaw in excess of 1,000 matches for the Red Devils in a lengthy – yet illustrious – managerial career on the touchline and is deemed to be one of the greatest managers to ever live and to play under him was, for many, a dream come true.
Not only was he a serial winning machine, but his personable nature – to staff and fans alike – is what made him stand out from the rest. But that also included keeping his players, from the youngest of academy stars to the most senior players, in check.

John O’Shea: ‘The restrictions are on the youth team’
And although Govan-born Ferguson ran the rule over senior proceedings, he also had a say on the club’s best-in-class academy set-up and, in particular, what colours boots the academy prospects were allowed to wear at all times.
Ferguson took a stand against brightly coloured football boots and enforced rules that saw all academy players wearing all-black footwear. Per The Guardian, former defender John O’Shea said: “The restrictions are on the youth team.”
They are told they have to stick to wearing black. Once in the reserve or first-team squad there are no restrictions, but if you are wearing flashy colours and don’t play too well, you’re likely to get singled out.

Sir Alex Ferguson witnessed some of the hardest footballers of all time during his time in the sport – but one stood out above the majority.
Ferguson took charge of his final game at the end of the 2012/13 campaign after the Red Devils had won their most recent Premier League title – but there has been recent proof to suggest that the 83-year-old’s tradition remains at the Theatre of Dreams.
The club’s Under-13s recently lifted gold in the Premier League Cup North – and, in the wake of their victory, a picture was posted online. Basking in their success, it was noted that all the players were donning old-school black football boots.
Lifting the lid on what keeps Manchester United’s Carrington widely regarded as one of the greatest academies in Premier League history, former box-crasher Scott McTominay lifted the lid on what the youngsters thought of the rule. “I probably couldn’t tell you one player who likes wearing black boots,” the now-Napoli star said, per The Sun.
“But it was the rules and something accustomed to every academy player and if someone tried to come out in red boots it’s like ‘You’re no different to any of us so get your black boots back on until you earn the respect and right to wear coloured boots’.”
