Serie A planning to introduce salary caps and VAR on call

Serie A is currently trying to reform the league and two things that they want to introduce are salary caps and having teams the opportunity seek VAR for specific decisions.

La Repubblica have reported about this reform are being prepared by the Serie A and the documents could be presented to the FIGC by Tuesday, a day after the meeting involving the clubs will also take place regarding the regulation to reduce the number of teams that take part in the league to 18.

It will be a 25-page document which will have 12 articles 45 entries in total, with the document titled ‘If not now, when?’. It is almost ready. The document starts with a political question. Serie A wants to have the final say on any Federal Council vote that concerns it and in particular, for the licenses for registering for the championship.

Another regulation is the proposal to reduce the number of Serie C clubs, but the criteria to cut those teams to a number is yet to be decided. The sustainability issue is a prime aspect, which includes salary caps so that teams don’t spend excessively in relation to how much they earn. The idea is also to increase the number of non-EU players, while allowing them the possibility of them signing eight-year deals.

Then, there is the regulation for reforming the Coppa Italia into an NBA style format. The idea is to ensure that some matches count for both the cup and the league, to reduce the number of seasonal matches. There is also a reform which will make sure that the Super Cup will not be played in Saudi Arabia, with the USA an option.

There is also an unusual proposal to reduce the number of matches that Italy play. They’d like UEFA and FIFA to merge the October and November sessions and reviewing the World Cup and European Championship qualifying system on the model of the Olympics.

A prominent feature of that is that clubs want a live VAR feature or a challenge system. They’d like the challenge system to be available once or twice in a game, while having VAR conversations to be heard live during games.
