The Sevilla squad rested over the international weekend before returning to training on Tuesday morning, but there is one man who has not stopped during the break. Sergio Ramos has been training with the goal of being fit and ready for the return to league action with his new team.
“The intensity he puts in, it’s as if he’s a youth-team player instead of an established 37-year-old star,” says one of those who watches Ramos train at the Ciudad Deportiva José Ramon Cisneros Palacios, in words picked up by AS.
Sevilla boss José Luis Mendilibar was one of those who, throughout the summer, was more than open to the possibility of having the experienced centre-back in his squad for the season. The former Eibar head coach knows that Ramos can bring experience and know-how to a backline that is young and still has its weaknesses, as evidenced by the eight goals conceded in the first three games of the campaign.
Ramos knows his body better than anyone else, but Mendilibar is hoping to not overuse him this season. After almost two decades at the top, Ramos will know when and for how long he can play.
The former Real Madrid captain could make his debut against Las Palmas at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Sunday, 18 years and 20 days after his last match in a Sevilla shirt.
