Martin Schmidt was far from satisfied with Mainz’s performance against Bochum.
Mainz sporting director Martin Schmidt didn’t hold back in his criticism of the team’s performance in Friday’s 2-2 draw with Bochum.
‘Die Nullfünfer’ were trailing twice, but ultimately salvaged a draw thanks to Tom Krauss’ late equaliser.
However, according to Schmidt, Mainz didn’t deserve the point.
“The equaliser somewhat masks the performance. It was a terrible first half and a good 20 minutes after the break isn’t enough to win here. That’s not enough as a team. There’s no point in sugarcoating the game now, ” Schmidt said in a post-match interview.
“These are games that you have to win, so everyone has to ask themselves whether this is the performance we want to bring to the pitch. What was good at the end was the will, the punch, that everyone believed in it again.
“An undeserved point like this can be a game changer this season, we can take that with us, but it wasn’t enough over 90 minutes. We have to talk about this clearly. The club gives the team peace, we stand together, but the team has a responsibility to approach the games in the way that is necessary in the relegation battle.”
Mainz are bottom of the Bundesliga with just three points after nine games.
