Leroy Sané is a big doubt for Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga clash with Freiburg on Friday night, having recently trained individually due to patellar tendon problems.

This was confirmed by Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel at Thursday’s pre-match press conference.

“Leroy always wants to play. He’s someone who can tolerate pain extremely well. He’s felt something in the last few weeks. Maybe he’s been grinning and bearing it a bit too much. I get the impression he’s not completely free. He has a lot of aches and pains and is paying a bit of a price for the overload,” said Tuchel.

“We need to find the best solution for tomorrow. He’s doing an individual test now. If he can, we’ll take him into the final training session. We’ll see if he can make the squad tomorrow and perhaps help us from the bench. We have to look from day to day.”

On a more positive note for Bayern, Tuchel revealed that Alphonso Davies is set to return to the squad after a spell on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Dayot Upamecano is back from suspension, but even with Matthijs de Ligt out of the squad after picking up a fifth yellow card last week, the Frenchman is not in line to start.

With Upamecano suspended for Bayern’s Champions League return leg at Lazio on Tuesday, Tuchel plans to start Eric Dier and Min-jae Kim at the back on Friday.

Asked who will start in de Ligt’s absence, he said:

“Min-jae Kim will play if nothing changes. Dayot Upamecano is fit but he’s suspended for Tuesday, so it doesn’t make sense.”

Tuchel also confirmed that Joshua Kimmich will start at right-back again, meaning that Aleksandar Pavlovic and Leon Goretzka will likely be paired in central midfield once more.
