Diadie Samassekou’s loan-out to Olympiacos Pirareus is through. The 26-year-old will play the duration of the 2022/23 campaign in the Greek Super League. According to German footballing magazine Kicker, the Greek Champions have secured a €13 million purchase option as part of the deal.
The Malian defensive midfiedler was widely regarded to be among the best in the Bundesliga by many German football watches. New TSG trainer André Breitenreiter nevertheless preferred to use German youth international Dennis Geiger as his midfield anchor this season. Samassekou started just one match this season.
He was subbed off as part of an early tactical shift in round one against Gladbach. Clearly looking displeased after this move, Samassekou would not make another meaningful appearance for the club again. The Malian will join another former Bundesliga player, Bayern’s long-term loaner James Rodriguez, as a new arrival over at the Karaiskakis.
“Diadie was extremely unhappy with his current sporting situation and approached us with an urgent desire to transfer,” TSG sporting director Alexander Rosen noted in a statement, “we have found a very good solution in everyone’s interest, and we’ll re-evaluate the situation after the end of this season.”
