Roy Keane has ripped into Manchester United’s decision over one of the members of Michael Carrick’s coaching team. The former Red Devils captain has been left scratching his head at how one man has landed a job at Old Trafford.
Carrick, who spent 12 seasons on the red side of Manchester as a player, was confirmed as the head coach until the end of the current season after Ruben Amorim’s sacking. The Englishman beat ex-United teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the role after both met with the club.

Roy Keane has not forgotten the comments Michael Carrick’s wife, Lisa, made about him in 2014.
Joining Carrick as part of his coaching staff will be Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and former England No.2 Steve Holland. While Gary Neville has praised the latter, his ex-teammate Keane laid into one of the other appointments.
Roy Keane Can’t Believe Jonny Evans’ Man Utd Role
Speaking on The Overlap, Keane expressed his confusion at how former United defender Evans got a job on the coaching staff. The Northern Irishman only left Old Trafford as a player in 2025, but was handed a job by Darren Fletcher before Carrick.
Keane couldn’t hold in his frustration at Evans’ appointment. Neville was explaining the benefits of having Holland on the team, before being cut off by the Irishman, who vented about Evans:
“He’s on the beach two weeks ago, Jonny Evans. Jonny Evans leaves Man United four or five weeks ago as a loans manager, and then Darren Fletcher gives him a job, strangely enough gives him a job.
“He has two games, Fletch goes and Carrick gives him a job. Great, isn’t it? We should all go to Barbados for a week. You’re on about getting your coaching staff in, you’re praising one of them, saying he’s experienced and then we just let the other two go, Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans. What has Jonny Evans done to be a coach of Man United’s first team?”
As he’s only just finished his playing career, this is Evans’ first job as a coach. That prompted Keane into another rant.
He continued: “You don’t know anything about Jonny Evans’ coaching – because he’s never coached! That’s my point! But he’s gone into Man United. But that’s ok because we’ve got Stevie Holland, our new guru! So excited about these people, their experience, you worked with him at England.”

Keane Fires Another Dig at Sir Alex Ferguson
Evans wasn’t the only one on the receiving end of Keane’s anger. As he did just last week, the 54-year-old took a swipe at the influence Sir Alex Ferguson still holds at the club.
He also managed to fit in a dig at Fletcher, as he said:
“Before Burnley and Brighton at home…. Fletch knows the club, works with the academy, he knows the girl in the canteen, and he rings Sir Alex Ferguson to ask him what colour socks he’s going to wear in the morning. How did the two games go?”
